Sometimes landing a creative element in programming is best accomplished by starting with what you WON’T do again. So it was with our annual message on tithing. Our pastor had become attached to particular sketch that the creative team did not want to repeat. Our only hope, our one driving incentive; something new, something fresh, something better.

When the team of brainstormers met, we revisited all the ways we had communicated the simple mathematical concept of 10%. In the course of that stroll down memory lane, we recalled that one year we had actually created a “Tithe Slide”. Yep, you heard me. Country music and line dancing were all the rage so we choreographed a dance that incorporated the passing of the offering basket, in time no less. Tempting to repeat? Sure! NOT! But what would that look like updated?
That’s all it took for someone to then blurt out, “How about a tithe RAP!” Eureka! That could be really fun! OR, it could be really cheeeeeeessssyyyy-- cheesy like Papa John’s Seven cheese pizza cheesy. “Fine!” we thought. We’ll lean into the cheese.
Money/Finance + cheese= geeky accountants. (at least that’s how we do math)
So our mostly likely candidate to write the lyrics, a 40 something year old white woman, took a stab at it and hit it out of the park. Coupled with geeky dance moves (hey we all know that guy at parties) and the right guys wearing the “bling”, it was magic.
To date they tell me that over 1,400 churches have downloaded the video and the script. Every once in a while you find their appearances posted on Youtube. It’s always makes us smile to know we are helping churches teach truth and use a little humor to do it.
